Without UTM tags, half your marketing shows up in Google Analytics as "direct" traffic - a black hole that tells you nothing. Tag every link you put in an ad, email, social post, or QR code, and GA4 will show you precisely which channel, campaign, and even which button drove each visit and sale.

They can create duplicate-URL noise if search engines index tagged URLs, but a canonical tag on your pages (which every well-built site has) neutralizes it. Never use UTMs on internal links and you're safe.

| Parameter | Answers | Convention | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| utm_source | Where did the click come from? | Lower-case platform or partner name | facebook, newsletter, google, qr |
| utm_medium | What type of channel? | Use GA4’s recognised mediums so default channel grouping works | social, paid_social, email, cpc, referral, print |
| utm_campaign | Which campaign? | Lower-case, hyphenated, dated | spring-sale-2026, webinar-oct-2026 |
| utm_content | Which version or placement? | Describe the variant | hero-button, footer-link, video-a |
| utm_term | Which keyword? (paid search) | Optional | logo-resizer |
Printed QR codes are a classic blind spot in analytics — scans look like direct traffic. Tag the destination with utm_source=qr and utm_medium=print, but keep the printed URL short by pointing the QR code at a redirect on your own domain that forwards to the tagged link. Shorter URLs make sturdier QR codes; see the QR code with logo guide.
Never put personal information such as email addresses or names into UTM values; they are visible in the address bar and stored in analytics. Recent links are kept only in your browser’s local storage, and you can clear them at any time.
