Choosing the settings

Padding: the default 12% suits most marks. Increase it for square badges that look cramped in the 16 px preview; decrease it for thin, wide marks that look too small.
Background: transparent looks native in light browser tabs, but dark icons can disappear in dark-mode tabs. A solid brand colour is the safer default. The Apple icon always gets a solid background because iOS fills transparency with black.
Rounded corners: softens the tab icon; the Apple icon is left square because iOS applies its own mask.
App name and theme colour: used by Android when someone adds your site to the home screen, and for the browser toolbar colour on some devices.

Testing after upload

Browsers cache favicons for a long time, so check your new icon in a private window. Open /favicon.ico and /site.webmanifest directly to confirm they are at the site root. On a phone, use “Add to Home Screen” to see the Apple or Android icon. Google can take several weeks to show a new favicon in search results.

Troubleshooting a blurry or unreadable favicon

If the 16 px preview is a smudge, the logo has too much detail for that size. Use an icon or a single bold initial instead of the full logo — the favicon guide shows how to simplify a mark. If the source image is small, start from a larger file: at least 512 × 512 px gives the best results across every size in the package.
