Convert Your Logo for Dark Mode Without Losing Its Hues

Upload a PNG, WebP or SVG logo and get a dark mode version that keeps every brand hue. Only the colors that would get lost on your dark surface become lighter.

How to Prepare a Logo for Dark Mode

A solid light version is the quick fix for dark backgrounds, but it flattens a multi-color mark into a silhouette: see why one-color versions break on multi-color marks. This converter keeps each color's hue and changes only its lightness, only where needed. It runs in your browser; your file is never uploaded.

    What happens to your logo

    1. Visible pixels are grouped into up to 8 colors; transparent pixels are ignored.
    2. Each color's WCAG contrast against your dark surface is measured.
    3. Colors below the target get a higher OKLCH lightness with the same hue: navy #1E3A8A (1.80:1 on #121212) becomes #3C5DB0 (3.01:1). Chroma drops only where sRGB runs out.
    4. Pixels follow their nearest colors and alpha is untouched, so anti-aliased edges stay smooth.

    Lift or smart invert?

Override any color with your brand's dark-mode value, or press Keep. Test a single pair in the Contrast Checker. Want a flat all-light or all-dark version instead? Do a one-color recolor.

Ship both versions with one picture tag

Upload both PNGs to one folder and paste the generated code where your logo goes. The prefers-color-scheme query follows the device or browser setting, not a theme toggle on your site; if you have one, swap the image with the class that switches your theme.

    Frequently asked questions

What contrast should a logo have on a dark background?

WCAG exempts logos from its contrast rules, but 3:1 is its level for meaningful graphics and a sensible floor for a mark people must recognize. If the logo includes small text such as a tagline, aim for 4.5:1.

Will the dark version still match my brand colors?

Every color keeps its hue. Lightness rises only for colors that fail, and chroma drops only when sRGB has no lighter version of that color. If your brand guide lists dark-mode values, enter them as overrides.

Does the picture-tag swap work in email and on social media?

It works in all current major browsers. Email apps handle dark mode inconsistently and social platforms show a single image, so there use one version that works on both backgrounds, such as the logo on a solid tile.

Can I convert an SVG logo and keep it as a vector?

This tool renders SVGs at 512, 1024 or 2048 px and exports PNG. To keep a vector, edit the fills in the SVG Color Editor, or use fill="currentColor" on an inline SVG.

Why did smart invert make my orange darker?

Inverting mirrors lightness, so an orange at 70% lightness lands near 30%, too dark for a dark surface. Leave "Then lift any color still below the target" on, or press Keep for that color.

Dark Surfaces and the Contrast They Demand

Dark mode is not one color, and a logo that clears 3:1 on one surface can miss it on another. The last column is the darkest neutral gray that still reaches 3:1; any logo color darker than that needs lifting.

Why lightness is adjusted in OKLCH, not HSL

In HSL, pure yellow and pure blue are both 50% lightness, yet yellow's relative luminance (0.93) is nearly 13 times blue's (0.07). OKLCH's L tracks perceived lightness and its hue holds steady, so a lifted blue stays blue instead of drifting toward purple.

Test on more than one dark surface

#5A5A5A reaches 3.04:1 on #000000 but only 2.41:1 on #1E1E1E. Convert for the lightest dark surface your logo will sit on, then check the tiles under the preview.
